Trying a New Doctor

August 14, 2018

Hi, Isabella again!

We are trying a new doctor now for finding a better way to deal with the problem. Though, there is no set treatment for migraine as per the doctors apart from over-the-counter medicines or something prescribed by the doctor.

But we have come to terms with a doctor who has also referred a therapist to deal with the mental ordeal of Andrea.

While we were deep into the search, I realized some essentialities that should be kept in mind by every parent who is trying a new doctor for a migraine.

What did I Think About When Trying out a New Doctor?

I needed a second opinion as to how to go about things, to at least ensure that my daughter doesn’t suffer from pain as much. During that journey, here are a few of the things that I learnt.

Some essentialities while getting in touch with a new doctor:

  • Keep an open mind: There are no fixed treatments for a migraine so don’t go to a new doctor thinking that they will come up with a treatment which is not all formulated now. You are going to a new doctor for a better process and understanding.
  • Help your doctor: After changing the doctor, it’s essential that you start by giving relevant information to the doctor. You need to describe things such as the location of a headache, any possible food or condition that triggers it, possible reasons for aggravation, the inception of a headache, frequency and so on. Such information will give the doctor an idea of what they are dealing with.
  • Ask all your questions: There might be ample of questions regarding your situation. It is important all these questions are asked. I did the mistake of assuming that the doctor will answer the questions without me asking. But questions are always varied from one another, so it’s important to get all your queries out.
  • Educate yourself on the condition: When you are dealing with a condition that doesn’t have a set treatment, then it is essential that you understand the condition. Read journals, articles and materials that are available for a migraine as a condition.

Consult with other patients and understand their stand. This will provide you with an idea about the whole thing, and you can try to take care of those too.

  • Follow-up care: If you want a treatment to work then make sure you always take note of the follow-up care. Make sure as a parent you take care of the medications. Your child might skip their medicine don’t allow them to do so.

I have had a positive output with our new doctor by following these essentialities. Stay healthy everybody!

Natural Ways to Fight Inflammation

July 26, 2018

Ask any parent. It is completely heartbreaking to watch a child in pain. The suffering of the young is unbearable. Somehow we expect adults to cope, although it point of fact, pain is as debilitating for them as it is for children. The difference for me as a parent of a daughter with a chronic condition is that pain affects the way they develop and interact with the world. If an adult faces the onset of pain later in life, their personalities and ability to socialize are already formed. Not so with youth. Pain can impair normal progression of self-actualization.

However, and I write this with great emphasis, many children survive in spite of their pain. They become accepting and almost complacent. They do not want to burden their parents with guilt or draw undue attention to something they wish to suppress. It takes skill to be a successful parent to such children. You are not sure if you are doing the right thing. This is from a psychological perspective. From the practical point of view, you can learn to help the child manage his or her pain. No doubt the doctor will prescribe medications and various therapies. This can include biofeedback, hypnosis, better hydration, and exercises to relieve tension and stress.

Even if your child does not have a chronic illness, there will be pain from time to time. You will want to do your best to prevent it and deal with it when it comes. Avoiding too much drama helps. Learn what causes pain from your pediatrician, such as inflammation, over use of muscles and tendons, or poor nutrition. My doctor says that in addition to any prescribed remedy, it is wise to keep your child nourished and hydrated. One of the things suggested for inflammation in particular was a good water filter system like the ones reviewed on this web site in the house to avoid the expense of bottled water. It is easy to install and provides fresh-tasting chemical-free water the entire family will enjoy. Remember the dictum about six to eight glasses a day?

It was some of the best advice I had heard in a long time and something I could do in a flash. I felt good about taking action that would benefit my daughter and everyone else in the house. In addition, my children are in the habit of getting a good night’s sleep. When they wake up, they start the day with some type of liquid. I help them stretch a bit if they are sore. Having a good mattress certainly helps. Don’t overlook this obvious cause of discomfort and pain. Adults aren’t the only ones who suffer from a too hard or too soft mattress. Meanwhile, keep the filtered water flowing.

My Best Advice to Parents Starting This Journey

July 14, 2018

When a teen girl experiences a migraine, her pain manifestations are different. My daughter’s migraine often tends to be severe during her menstruation on. But I came to realize that by keeping constant monitoring of her pain behaviour and triggers.

Parents, like me, who are also experiencing their child’s migraines and are still in early days, guess what? I have some advice for you. These are my observations of dealing with a teenage girl child who gets episodic attacks of a migraine.

These will help:

Understand the triggering reason: If it’s a headache and they are already diagnosed with migraines then start with the very first step. Identify the situations or reasons which trigger a migraine. When my daughter was diagnosed with a migraine, I found out that sleep deprivation was one reason for her pain discomfort. And within days to come, I found out other things too. So, talk to them and understand what provides discomfort to them and followed by a migraine.

Let the school know: Talk to the school authorities and let them know of your child’s condition. I have done that and have spoken to the school administrations that whenever Andrea feels an impending attack, please allow her to take her medications. Often school don’t allow such things if they are not informed in prior. So, make sure you let them know and if necessary, provide the respective prescriptions for the same.

Keep a check on the child’s food habits: Often children who experience a migraine are sensitive to certain foods which in turn trigger migraine. I will advise all the parents that make sure you avoid giving them fatty foods as those are some sensitive foods for a migraine. Also, it’s very important that they don’t skip any meal. Make them drink plenty of water as it is a source of oxygen which is helpful for migraine attacks.

Don’t lose hope: As a mother, I have just one request to you, please don’t lose hope. You are the best thing for your child and also their strength. If you feel low, then it will affect their power to stay strong. Remember, there are lucid days and make those days happy and full of love and laughter.

Our strength as parents is what matters the most until our little ones grow up and start tackling their pain on their own. Andrea Says, Stay fit and fine!

What Part is Pain, What Part is Bad Behavior?

June 28, 2018

Life is difficult for people who have to counter the regular ordeal of pain and has to fight it continuously. For, a parent who has to deal with the physical pain of their young child and find ways to tackle the suffering on a daily basis, it’s a journey.

Hi, I am Isabella, and I am a parent whose 14-year-old daughter suffers from chronic pain due to an illness. She suffers from a low back pain, and at first, we found no reason she would have it. However, the doctor informed us that the space between the spinal nerves and spinal cord weren’t normal for my daughter and had become smaller, which had led to spinal stenosis.

What is meant by a low back pain?

The region of our body starting after the ribcage widely known as the lumbar region is a highly sensitive and delicate area.

Where you can find this portion having the potency of joining a volley of interconnected bones, joints, nerves and ligaments working together to aid strength and flexibility, wrong posture or movements can potentially damage this section of your body easily.

Although the injuries most of the time get better with time it may persist sometimes. In these cases, you may need to get them treated with medical help.

We never thought that our little family would take such a rough turn. Suddenly everything came to a screeching halt one fine day.

About one and half years ago my daughter was diagnosed with a severe migraine.

How bad is it? A migraine is a condition that affects one part of the head and manifests into nausea, vomiting, uneasiness to light or sound and severe eye pain. Often described as a pounding sensation, the migraine tends to persist for even up to a couple of days. The sufferer often gets agitated and might even feel like banging their head against a wall.

My daughter is no exception. She is a young and pretty lady in her early teens who love to enjoy with her friends and has always been full of life. Even in her lucid times, she tends to show her empathetic, kind and charming being to everybody around. But things tend to take a lousy turn when her headaches come knocking.

The impact on my daughter’s behaviour:

The first time she was diagnosed with the condition Andrea was just 12, but with the passing time, she has started to show signs that are difficult to handle. Well, she is a teenager and has issues, but her life largely depends on the aftermaths and results of the chronic pain that she suffers.

It’s not an easy journey for her. Her attacks are not very common, and we are still trying to understand what triggers her pain. These days she has started to feel uncomfortable with her body and thinks she might just be the only one suffering from such a condition. The result of such a headache has made her introvert and, she doesn’t like going out as much as she is scared of migraine attacks.

This has started to take a toll on her behaviour. This, in turn, has even made her rough towards us and she thinks we don’t love her anymore.

This psychological turn owing to her illness has taken our happiness down, and relief is the only thing I want; her pain-free life is my only wish.

Natural methods are best ways to relieve the pain even without medicines. But medicines being an important part of people suffering from a migraine I always make sure that Andrea carries them. Still, I have got hold some natural ways that might be helpful and guess what? My kid is showing visible results.

Acupressure helps One of the oldest Chinese Traditional Medicine that helps in relieving headaches. Our Doctor also believes that this is a harmless method that can be tried by anybody. For this, all you need to do is take your child’s hands and squeeze the portion between the Thumb and Index finger for instant relief.

Regular exercises: As per a Swedish Study conducted in 2009 on migraines it was found that when regular cycling was adopted by patients, then headache episodes decreased. Even Yoga can help as an exercising substitute. If needed consult a yoga specialist and ask for certain Asanas that are helpful for providing relief to the headaches.

Make sure your child takes computer breaks: Nowadays, children are exposed to computers and smartphones and these in turn trigger such headaches. Don’t allow your children to stay in front of the computer for a long time. Make sure that they take smartphone breaks. Even doctors recommend that bringing down such exposure ensures that they will have a bit of relief from headaches.

Avoid sun: It’s not possible to keep children away from the sun but taking precautions when they are out in the sun can be of great help. As per a study conducted by Harvard University in 2009, it was found that headaches tend to go up around 7.5% when exposed to the sun. Ask your child to stay away from bright sunlight and pack fluids for them. Even sunglasses can come to great help.

Stringing Some Pain-Free Days Together!

June 14, 2018

If you are lucky enough, then your child will stay lucid for some day without you trying anything else. But it’s best to get some with some external ways.

With Andrea, we had our share of good and bad days. For the past one and half years, I have tried my level best to get a possible way to make sure she gets more of her lucid life. As a parent, we always want the best for our child but don’t end up being successful quite often.

I have taken various steps to ensure that my daughter gets more pain-free days and have been a bit successful. I want the other parents to know how I have done that.

A diet that might help: Though this is not a proven method yet it has helped Andrea to get more pain-free days to some extent. I have concentrated on maintaining a diet for my child. As I have mentioned earlier, there are foods which can trigger a migraine, and you would want to avoid that.

Nobody knows what the exact foods are that trigger migraine. It depends from individual to individual. For Andrea, it has always been cheese and oily food. I have added a lot of veggie-based food in her diet including good fats such as Omega-3 and Magnesium. But that’s my undertaking and is totally based on the triggers of my daughter. It’s important on the part of the parent to identify their child’s trigger foods and formulate a diet based on that.

Water is the magical element: If experts are to be believed, then water is the best way to avoid migraines. Dehydration is one of the common triggers of a migraine. So, for healthy function of the body drinking a lot of water becomes very important. I personally always make sure that Andrea carries a water bottle wherever she goes.

But as children are, they are not always a fan of plain simple water. You can just mix some juices whenever you can or even herbal tea. But make sure that the liquid you are giving them should be low in calorie and sugar. I have actually added lots of juices in my daughter’s diet, and it turns out she loves those.

There is no guarantee that these will work for everybody but I have seen visible results in my daughter. Her lucid days have urged me to get the best possible ways to make sure those pain-free days are more and happier. Stay happy and healthy!
